Covid-19 Latest & update 2021

Dear Guests,

Skysail  is looking forward to welcoming you in 2021,    Visit Cornwall has an on-going updated list of attractions that are open and will tell you how to book, mostly on-line and with timed entry.

Since 19th of July, many more attractions have opened and like most places masks, distancing and Covid-19 precautions are still very much being observed.  We are still operating our Covid-19 regime at Skysail.

You will receive a welcome pack on arrival that contains all your consumables, this limits contact with the items in the house to just one person.  We will leave you some fresh milk.  We also are supplying sanitizer alcohol gel at the entrance.  We have an enhanced cleaning regime for Covid-19 which includes the use of approved Sanitisers.

We have a symptom checker at the house and guidelines to follow in case you have any Covid-19 signs whilst at Skysail.

Good to go is a Visit Britain standard designed to give assurances to visitors that the premises which have been Self-Assessed are of a standard which complies to Government Guidelines on Covid-19 with respective national guidance, including social distancing and cleanliness protocols which have been implemented at Skysail. In England, the business aligns  with the UK Government’s official guidance for the sector including ‘Working Safely during COVID-19: Visitor Economy’. It is an ‘alert’ system ensuring that Skysail is signed-up to the standard,  Skysail and its house-keeping and visitors alike will be notified appropriately if there are changes to the official guidance. Random spot-checks are taking place to ensure this business is adhering to the guidance.

HM Gov have decided all hospitality businesses have to display QR codes for customers/guests to scan, to work with the track and trace app on your mobile phone. This is located at Skysail.

We thank you for taking ongoing Covid-19 care at Skysail and for using and adhering to the high standards we maintain.

Hand Sanitizer is provided at this house and additional cleaning regimes have been put into place to keep you safe.  We also have clear guidelines at the house for your continued Safety.     A certificate is available at the house for inspection.

Mevagissey coped well prior to the lockdown and restaurants were offering meals and takeaways and some additional lovely fayre as the entrepreneurship of the shops ensured that you could buy local.  Moores offer just about every type of fresh item from veg, cream, fruit, cakes, butter, meat and much more including many deli items.

The Post office caters for all your general needs including magazines and newspapers, there is the bakery and the pasty shop and fish and chips (of course),  to name but a few.   All the shops are located right in the middle of Mevagissey.   Lobbs farm shop, typical fresh produce but fantastic meat, is at the entrance to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and you can go there without visiting the gardens if you wish.

Many pubs and food outlets  continue to offer takeaways, this includes:
The Fountain Inn and Alvorada.
**We very much recommend you book your restaurants up to 6 weeks ahead of your holiday to ensure tables.
Outdoor eating/seating:
  • The Wheelhouse is open with outdoor seating all day with lunch and dinner menu.
  • The Ship at Pentewan which has good food has ample outside seating.
  • Polgooth Inn  Well recommended lots outside seating open 7 days a week.  (Polgooth Inn, Ricketts Lane, Polgooth, St Austell, Cornwall PL26 7DA 01726 74089
  • The Shack at Pentewan – great for lunch snacks is open all open air seating.
  • There is a facebook page called Mevagissey Area Food Food Outlets which allows food outlets to post updates which is quite useful.
  • The fountain has now outdoor seating in the street.

Building work has resumed next door and they had hoped to complete by the end of July this is now delayed until Christmas, however the house has no direct overlooking windows except for the dining room and so we hope you will not be disturbed.

I hope you are keeping well and safe and we are very much looking forward to seeing you.

Kind regards,

Laura Wood

Lovely holiday Review 31/7 – 6/8/2020

Mr. Richard. L.  Group of 5

  1. Cleanliness Rating – Excellent
  2. Did you find the welcome pack useful – Very much so
  3. Overall rating – Excellent
  4. Comments: The view is incredible. I enjoyed sitting, watching the sea enjoying my breakfast cup of tea it was so relaxing.  The open plan upstairs is beautiful and spacious.  We enjoyed walks around the headland to local villages. The walk down and up from Mevagissey was easier than it looks, but booking restaurants is essential.  We spent a couple of days in Portmellon kayaking and paddle-boarding, it was lovely, but not very big and no good spaces / seats for people to wait if not doing the sea sports.

BBC2 – This Fishing Life

Fishing boats

The first episode of a six part series on BB2 -“This Fishing Life” was focused on Mevagissey – one of the few remaining working fishing villages in Cornwall. Some of  the programme which was filmed in 2018 during devastating storms nicknamed the Beast from the East, viewers were introduced to Jack West, 26, whose family had spent thousands on refitting a boat.

A synopsis for the hour-long show stated: “Whilst other fishing communities are feeling the pinch, Mevagissey on Cornwall’s south coast bucks the trend, with 74 working boats in the harbour. Protected from the prevailing winds, with fish stocks that are beginning to return, and with boats being handed down from father to son, Meva is blessed.

“Fishing is in the blood here – for more than 250 years the men of Meva have followed their fathers to sea, eager to honour the family traditions. Now the next generation of ambitious young skippers are ready to make a go of it.

“Jack West fished with his dad growing up, and the family have decided the time is right to invest in Jack. Having spent thousands on the Anne Louise, the pressure is on to get out to sea and start earning some money.

“The Galwady Mor is owned by one of Mevagissey’s most successful fishing families, the Blameys. 27-year-old Chris is the fourth generation to go to sea. This year he takes over the responsibility of skippering the Galwady from his father Peter. The passing down of a lifetime’s knowledge is priceless, but Chris knows he will face different challenges to his dad. Whilst fish stocks are returning to Meva, there is not the abundance there once was.

“Mevagissey is a village built on fish – pilchards in particular.

The Fishermen’s Mission. Skysail supports the Fishermen’s Mission.  Skysail is keen to give something back to the Fishing Community.  If anyone would like a painting commission I give all the proceeds (framing not included) to The Fishermen’s Mission.  Please contact me for a quote. I prefer abstract, but will tackle watercolour, oils and mixed media, any size.  I am happy to show you examples of my work.   Please visit me on instagram. Laura Wood Art

“Poldark” and “Bad Education” films at Mevagissey

Cornwall was the main location for the remake of Winston Graham’s Poldark with Aidan Turner in the title role then followed the new film version of Bad Education a film for TV.

The Bad Education Movie sees comedian Jack Whitehall back in the role of Alfie Wickers, “the worst teacher ever to grace the British education system”.

The 26-year old is joined by the rest of the show’s cast, including Sarah Solemani, Mathew Horne and Harry Enfield.  The village and harbour shops and locations have been used in many of the scenes and given the locals a lot of interest and amusement! Here you can see them filiming on the quayside.

2021 Welcome

All is ready for 2021 at Skysail.  We welcome all our guests for 2021 and we want it to be perfect just for you!  We take great care to make sure you feel welcome and at home and that the same high standard is maintained all year round.  We have updated and refreshed and included some new additions for your comfort.  We pride ourselves to make sure of the little things that make your holiday special.   One thing that doesn’t change is the amazing sea view!

New restaurants in the village are doing well including the Mevagissey Spice, and  Number 5 which contribute to the array and choice of eateries available.  Mevagissey is so lucky to have a bakery, veg shop, general store, and pasty shop amidst the pretty village centre off the harbour.

In addition Lobbs Farm Shop is so good for its own lamb and its amazing butchers and farm shop and is so close at the entrance to the Lost Gardens of Helegan.lobbs farm shop

Mevagissey has seen some harsh winter weather with the fishing vessels braving the seas just the same. Amazing.

Lots of lovely  fresh fish is still available from the fish stall at the side of the harbour wall.

We are looking forward to welcoming you!
